GUIDED GEOLOGY DAY
Peak District Geology – around Castleton.
£70 per person.
The Peak District is a great place for climbing and walking, with single-pitch crags and friendly hills and valley scenery. The two main rock types which form the Peak district National Park – Upper Carboniferous Millstone Grit and Lower Carboniferous Limestone announce their presence clearly to produce the contrasting landscapes of the Dark and and White Peak.
The region around Castleton contains the best of both Dark and White Peak. Mam Tor, with its landslide features, imposing cliffs and views across to Kinder Scout is an ideal place to investigate the gritstone sequences of the Dark Peak, while Whinnats Pass and Treak Cliff show many of the features and fossils typical of White Peak limestone. Combined with the oil deposit at Windy Knoll and the important economic geology of the Blue John and Lead mines this makes a great introduction to the geology of the Peak District, with something for everyone.
This is a moderately challenging walk of 5-6 miles, with some steep ascents and descents. There will be some optional off-path walking on/above steep ground to access some sites.
